Grade 3 Math Communication Plan 2015/2016
(A. Sheffield, New Germany Elementary School)

Program Overview

There are five strands we will be focusing on throughout this year in math:

  • Number sense

  • Patterns and relationships

  • Measurement

  • Geometry

  • Statistics and probability.

Students will go through a variety of activities to ensure they develop an understanding of the concepts within each strand. Activities include, but are not limited to, the use of manipulative materials, mental math practice, collaboration, problem solving, and games. Focus is placed on how students reach their answers, not just on the final product. Throughout the year there will be an emphasis on learning and memorizing basic math facts to enable students to solve problems quickly and accurately.

Expectations for Learning Success

To achieve success in Grade 3, students are encouraged to strive to do their best, be good listeners, and respect themselves and others.

Communication

If you need to reach me you can do so by emailing me at asheffield@gnspes.ca, calling the school at 644‐5020, or through writing a note in your child’s agenda. I will do the same for you. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Assessment

Assessment for learning will be ongoing throughout the year. I will be using conversations/conferences/interviews, products/work samples, and observation to evaluate students’ learning. Report cards will be sent home after each term to show an evaluation of a student’s achievement. All formative and summative assessment will be taken into consideration when forming evaluations each term.
